6a00d83451c5ac69e200e5527e4c238833-800wi Like so many others I am sick of watching those numbers at the pumps climb higher and higher.  Although we don't go through as much gas as we used to living farther away from town, I am starting to look at ways to cut what little we do use.  Luckily my hubby works 3 miles from home but with the warm weather upon us he decided to be pro-active and ride his "then" non-existent bike back and forth to work.  Great idea! now we need that all important element to make this happen...a bike.  A quick look at Kijiij classified ads and we were one step closer to peddling our way to saving some moolah. By supper time Saturday we had the truck loaded with his and hers 21 speed mountain bikes, three helmets and a double stroller/bike trailer, all for $200.

Although loading up the kids and peddling our way to work or the park requires more time, patience and physical exertion we feel this is about more than saving money it is about our kids seeing what needs to be done such as:

1. survive the rising cost of everything

2. preserving precious resources, thus less pollution

3. a strong emphasis on being active.

Hopefully riding the bike on our busy road will not involve getting sideswiped by a dump truck or being chased by an enormous black lab...don't ask personal experience.

Yesterday I finally got the opportunity to take this colourful unit for a spin when I loaded up the kids and our stash of overdue library books and headed off.   In no time (downhill) we arrived at the local library to stock up on some additional books and movies for the week.   On our way home we spotted a quaint out of the way park and spent the following hour exploring this newfound gem.  As our bellies began to rumble we decided to attempt the treacherous uphill battle and FINALLY after 30 minutes pulled into our driveway

bookis

This was such a simple outing so why do I feel a small sense of accomplishment more so than if I simply went in the car.?  For one the exercise. I'm a runner and manage to get a daily run in prior to my hubby leaving but the bike switches the muscles you normally use therefore mixing up your workout.  In addition we were able to visit the local library that costs nothing, no gas, no rental fees and best of all we were recycling items and even opted out of the plastic bag provided.   With the introduction of computer games, TV and Internet many kids will not have the luxury of visiting such a spot and many have no idea what a Dewey decimal system is.  For this reason I have now made this a weekly event on Monday mornings to stock up on 6 books, one for every night of the week until we return them the following Monday.

I know it would have been easier to hop in the car and buckle up but I am making a conscious effort to use the vehicle less and promote a little more activity and simplified living.  Routine errands and trips to the park can be done using this mode of transportation, it just takes a little more preparation and planning on my behalf.  So far this bike thing is working for me.

Re: Wheeling in style

Good luck with your new venture! My husband is considering getting a bike to commute as well. Have a nice week!

Re: Wheeling in style

Funny how this is a WFMW post in the US (compliments for you!) when this is the way EVERY mommy works in the Netherlands. Everybody owns bicycles and uses them daily!

Re: Wheeling in style

Nic, you guys are way ahead of us here in terms of this mode of transportation. The problem with my area is 1. the seasons. we get 9 months of weather and maybe three months of decent weather. The other problem is the roads, for the most part they are not friendly towards bikers. Our road for example barely has a shoulder and the cars can be inches away from the handlebars. I have to plan the trip around early morning and supper traffic. The main centre of town has some roads accessible but for the most part it is not entrirely safe (in my opinion) especially with a kids trailer. The other problem is not many people do it and if more did they may change the roads but we have so much to learn from Europe in that regards as you guys have been dealing with the high gas prices for much longer and had to adapt, we have to follow suit and have a great deal to learn. I was guilty of using my car for everything, even for short trips to the store. That has since changed.

Re: Wheeling in style

Hmmm, I'm sitting her trying to picture myself biking into town... I have to laugh. We live a 25 minute drive from the nearest grocery store. I wish I could do it but seeing all the hills I just know I couldn't, right now. Although Niki I do know your hills I biked them one summer to and from work, where my 'rents live. I loved how easy it was to get to work, mostly all downhill but on the way home when I was most tired it was all uphill. But way to go... way to save on gas! Awesome.... We just tend to stay home more often or hubby gets things on the way home from work. One Saturday a month we head into town for the things that we need, other than that we stay home and go for walks here.

Re: Wheeling in style

Oh I love those! I used to have one years ago when I had just 2 and 3 kids. (It turned over once---too fast, downhill, sharp curve, and not me driving). I also had a baby seat on my bike as well as the trailer. Needless to say, when fully packed, I DID NOT GO UPHILL ANYWHERE!

We live in another place now, in the country. A long way from town---I miss my bike!

You guys will have so much fun---especially if you ever get caught out in the rain!:-) Hee Hee

Re: Wheeling in style

You are a great inspiration and a wonderful role model for you kids-- we all could use more free transport and exercise. I just blogged this week about folding bikes for those living in small spaces in urban areas and so seeing your blog entry was further confirmation that we need to think about biking http://www.onlineorganizing.com/BlogEntry.asp?id=1662

Re: Wheeling in style

Great deal on the bikes (and extra)! Even used bikes are very spendy around here.

Although we live somewhat in the country, we also live off a major highway, so are unable to bike anywhere. I definitely would if I could. My kids would love to be able to bike to the Library, especially my oldest who feels the need to remind me each Tuesday that it's Library day, LoL.

*Ps. I left this same comment yesterday, but it didn't seem to take. I had this problem one other time, but it's probably my computer which has been acting a bit erratic.
