tackle I have a love/hate relationship with plastic storage containers.  I love the ease and convenience for storing leftovers and other freezer bound goodies but I hate storing them, washing them and most of all the unhealthy (BPA) aspect of them.  I am trying to slowly wean myself off plastic but I still have an abundance kicking around and needed to come up with a way to organize it.  Past attempts failed miserably and always ended with me tossing ziploc freezables around like a mad woman, not pretty trust me.  Also somebody please help me solve the mystery as to why the tops always go missing?  Somewhere in this house is a large stash of single socks and Tupperware covers....

 containers

I started this transformation using 4 large Rubbermaid containers (ironic I know, start the process of getting rid of plastic by buying 4 more) and assigned each one a specific content.  One holds the bottoms, another for lids, the third holds all baby items and last but not least one for miscellaneous containers.  The nice thing about this system is I can line them all up on the island counter close to the dishwasher and unload the contents directly into the assigned tote. How convenient.  Before that I had them all stacked on the counter and had to put pieces away a little at a time as I attempted to find the matching lid somewhere in the dishwasher, on the floor or carried away by the baby. An added bonus to this would be the ease and convenience for Dane to open the cupboard and pull out a tote to play with all of the dishes.  When he is finally bored I simply toss them all in the totes and close the door, well worth the 20 minutes I received as he amused himself.

line up   dishwasher

So for now my containers have a permanent home and hopefully they will reduce in numbers as I strive to use more canning jars and other glass containers.  My husband always says "it is a process not an event"

So check out 5 minutes for mom to see what other mom's are up to.

Re: Tupperware taking over?

O.k., I do not think I have ever seen anyone with more Tupperware! Wow! That is a complete take over and I would catagorize you as a Tupperware junkie! Especially since you have tagged your self as "weaning off plastic"! My Tackle it Tuesday has to also do with an addiction, my craft/yarn area. I admit it, I am a yarn junkie! I need to clean up and organize my area so I can stop feeding the addiction of buying more yarn! Stop by!

Re: Tupperware taking over?

Believe it or not I got rid of some. I find it hard until I find an alternative as I do a great deal of freezer cooking and need containers for soups, stews, chilli etc. I do use glass canning jars for liquid but you have to be careful with those and expansion. One of them is all bottles so they will be put away as my son is working on a sippy cup. I guess I may not be able to go down much more if I continue to cook as I do but I have to keep them more organized.

Re: Tupperware taking over?

I feel your pain, and 4 medium sized bins is NOTHING. I used to have 4 of the Artificial Christmas Tree storage bins full of tupperware - the real stuff, no ziplock, no glad...
I got over that addiction, and I am sure you can get over your too.
And I completely understand how you feel about trying to find suitable replacements. My step-mother taught me this method: freeze the leftovers in a stainless steel mixing bowl. Once they are frozen, pop them out like GIANT ice cubes (ice domes?) and then store them in a ziplock freezer bag. When you go to thaw them out, put them in a pot - or if the stainless bowl is free, back into that. This way the food NEVER touches the plastic while it is warm enough for anything to leach into it. And the bags can be washed out with regular dish soap and cool water and be reused, again because only frozen food has been in them, they should be fairly clean.

Re: Tupperware taking over?

I too love the tupperware. And until a blogging friend (who could that be?) brought up the BPA aspect a few months ago, I sailed serenely with an ocean of containers myself, LoL;)

Seriously, they are SO convenient, I haven't been able to give them up totally. I had some coupons for the new ones by rubbermaid that have SCREW-ON lids, and are a little more heavy duty. I feel a little better now that I know you're in the same boat:)

And we too have a black hole of lids...and socks.
