I have heard this tip before and I had every intention of trying it. Then why was it I kept forking over money and jepordizing our health by purchasing those bags of microwave popcorn? We love the stuff, especially my hubby as he is attempting to cut out chips so he resorts to eating this every night. I finally decided to heed the advice of other blogger's and cook the stuff in a simple paper bag in the microwave. A quick glance in my cupboards revealed hundreds of these bags left over from my son's previous birthday party. What better way to use them up. I had my druthers on this one but held out hope this would be an answer to the unhealthy commercial kind. I am happy to report that I will no longer be buying shares to Orville Redenbaker's company as I have given up this practice. You simply fill up a paper bag with a handful (or two) of kernels and close the bag by folding it over several times. I cannot give an exact time on cooking as you all know microwave ovens vary but I normally stay pretty close and hit stop when the popping kernels slow down.
Moment of truth: They taste rather bland if you don't add some sort of topping (you cannot say you were not warned). We melt a little butter and pour this over the bag sprinkled with some salt. Another way I eat popcorn is with salsa (strange I know) but this is a healthier alternative to margarine. If you plan to throw caution to the wind and forgetting about calories or fat grams give this stuff a try.
I am glad I finally started cooking popcorn with this method and although it is simple AND frugal it was hard to break a habit. Consider commercial popcorn a thing of the past, only homemade stuff from here on in.
