diapers

Now that got your attention....

I can't say enough about my cloth diapers.  Even though I only started the process when my second son was 10 month old, I saved oodles of money and I did my little part to save the earth.  After extensive research online I found a great supplier that not only sent me some various AIO's (all in one) diapers she sent me some used Chinese prefolds along with some funky covers.  This variety enabled me to give them a test run (pardon the pun) and discover for myself what system worked best for me.  After several months it was unanimous, the prefolds with covers won hands down.

prefold

unfolded Chinese diaper

prefold with cover

All neatly folded and tucked in the cover (those poor unfortunate frogs )

Although the AIO's are far more convenient as they closely resemble a disposable diaper, they proved challenging to thoroughly clean.  Because they are elasticized around the legs, the material gathers and puckers resulting in trapped you know what.  Even though the washing machines are pretty tough these days, I have found the odd one to be a little dingy when coming out of a cycle.  This is where the prefolds kick butt (can't help myself).  They consist of a simple straight piece of material and when unfolded does not bunch or create hidden pockets.  Upon exiting the machine they are spotless and leave you with that "stick it in your face" squeaky clean. (yes, I sheepishly admit I have done this to ensure they were indeed so)

The bonus with prefolds is:

1. They are cheap

2. They are cheap

3. You guessed it, they are cheap.  Oh yeah! and the covers can be used several times before needing laundered.

aio After trying to strategically time the baby's "business" to correspond with him adorning an easily cleanable prefold, I needed to come up with a solution to use the AIO diapers that I paid dearly for.  I purchased these microfibre clothes at our local Dollarstore , folded them in half and placed them in his diaper.  This corralled the majority of the mess and resulted in easier clean up than the elasticized diapers.  Not only did this act as a liner to keep them clean, it allowed for easier shaking of (insert imagination) and eliminated the need for disposable liners.  Yes, your baby's butt may look a little large in those pants but the liners can soak up half a sink full of water when mopping floors so you can only imagine what it can do for your little peeing machine.  Unfortunately being the second child there has been more than one occasion when I have forgotten a diaper.  Unless he smells so bad your eyes water or he is so wet he takes it off himself , he has occasionally been forgotten.  Not to worry these little liners should bide you a couple extra hours.

For laundering I simply use a cold soak cycle and a short hot cycle.  Ideally they should be hung out to dry as there is no better bleaching than good ol' sunshine.

Re: Check out the sexy underwear!!!!

I use the prefolds to and find they are great for when we are home. I do like to travel with a couple bum genius pocket diapers I borrowed. The prefold do wash up nicely but sometime I find they get a little stinky! So I just wash them in vinegar and baking soda and the smell disappears. However I wont be taking them camping with us this week!!! It will be a disposable weekend.

Re: Check out the sexy underwear!!!!

I just wanted to say that I love using cloth diapers and I have the same froggy cover! I have been blessed with 8 children and did not really start using cloth seriously until around our fifth child. That is when the internet was more accessible and I did my research and was able to get good cloth diapers and cover on line.

I like your idea for the microfiber clothes from the dollar store I will have to give that a try for night time. Thanks for the post!
God Bless, Kathy

I am with you on the prefolds and covers! They are the best.

Re: Check out the sexy underwear!!!!

We do the same! We bought some fancy schmancy BumGenius (with gift certificates) and now treat them like covers with prefolds. One thing we hated was the snappi. We used it a few times, and the second one is still in the package.

Re: Check out the sexy underwear!!!!

This is interesting!

Prefolds are one of the things I actually didn't try (I rented a trial package from my local cloth diaper store before I started CDing). I'm thinking of giving prefolds a try for the new baby. A friend of mine just had a baby, and said she'd be happy to pass along her newborn prefolds and covers when she's finished with them. I'm guessing that since your baby was 10 months old when you started CD-ing (mine was 5 or 6 months), that you don't have any experience with how prefolds contain newborn poop? :) I'm also sewing up some fitteds, and I'm going to experiment with making different kinds of covers - maybe some PUL ones, and some fleece and wool soakers. I think I'll just have a variety of different types on hand so I can see what works at the newborn stage.

Also, something I wanted to mention: Since I've been reading obsessively about cloth diaper sewing lately, there have been a lot of warnings out there about not using microfibre cloths next to your baby's skin. They're fine as an insert, but right next to baby's skin they can draw moisture out of the baby and can be very drying (they're THAT absorbent!). Anyway, just thought I'd mention it. :)

Re: Check out the sexy underwear!!!!

Alissa, not sure how it keeps in the newborn poop. I am not sure anything does LOL. love those up the back ones. Good to know about the microfibre cloths. I will have to read more about that. To be honest I doubt they are the true microfibre as they are at the dolarstore and the original ones are much more expensive. They feel more like cotton to be honest. They are saying not to use the PUL covers as well like the ones pictured here. They don't touch their skin but it does make you kind of paranoid. I guess the only way to be sure is go strictly organic cotton.

Re: Check out the sexy underwear!!!!

Niki,

I hadn't heard anything about the PUL covers - what is it they're saying?? I definitely prefer organic when possible, and once I get a few practice diapers under my belt I'm thinking of buying some organic bamboo or cotton (I actually have some sitting in my shopping cart on Wazoodle, but I'm still recovering from the cost of my snap press. :). You still need a cover though, so I'm guessing wool is best??

Re: Check out the sexy underwear!!!!

We love cloth diapering, but I've never given prefolds a try. I think we should! Thanks!

Re: Check out the sexy underwear!!!!

I love those prefolds too! Is that a thirsties diaper cover I see in one of the pics? We were give two of those and I love them, but I mostly use cheapo nylon pants (due to the cheapo factor). They work fine most of the time. I have one bum genius and hope to get a couple more (used) for nighttime soon. Fun post:)

Rachel, not it is a Bummies super whisper wrap. They have been great so far. I do need to order some bigger ones though.

Re: Check out the sexy underwear!!!!

Wow, fancy cloth diapers, LoL. I've never seen these before. I would actually give them a try if I still had little ones. The price of diapers nowadays is absolute highway robbery.

Re: Check out the sexy underwear!!!!

I love your blog and cloth dipes. I have also heard that about microfiber, but if your not seeing anything.......? I used microfiber in addition to prefolds and folded the same way as you did, exept with the prefold touching the bum, for added nightime protection.

IMO prefolds work just as well as fitted for nb's. Fitteds might be a little better, but let's face it.....newborns do magic with their booties when it comes to pooing. It appears in the strangest places, and you wonder...."how did it get all the way up there?" :)
